Climate activist and innovator Sonam Wangchuk was arrested in Leh on Friday. His arrest came two days after protests over Ladakh’s demand for sixth schedule inclusion turned violent. Wangchuk was scheduled to hold a press conference at 2.30 pm, but police detained him before he could speak to the media.

Protests Turned Violent in Ladakh

Wangchuk has been leading a campaign for Ladakh’s full statehood and its recognition under the Sixth Schedule. He and local groups argue that this is important to protect the region’s tribal identity and resources.

On Wednesday, protests in Leh took a violent turn. The clashes led to the death of four people and left more than 50 others injured, including security personnel. Authorities blamed Wangchuk for making “provocative statements” that fueled unrest.

FCRA Licence of SECMOL Cancelled

Wangchuk’s arrest came just a day after the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) cancelled the FCRA licence of his NGO, the Students Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh (SECMOL). The MHA said SECMOL violated foreign funding rules under the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act, 2010.

The cancellation means the NGO can no longer receive funds from abroad. The government cited fund violations, while Wangchuk and his team denied the charges.

Wangchuk Denies Allegations

Sonam Wangchuk, who won the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 2018, has rejected the government’s claims. He said he has not encouraged violence and that the protest was meant to remain peaceful. He also expressed sympathy for the families of those killed in the clashes.

Internet Suspended in Leh

Following his arrest, internet services were suspended in Leh. Officials said the step was taken to prevent further unrest and stop the spread of misinformation. Strict security arrangements remain in place in the region.

A Growing Political Crisis

The events have deepened tensions in Ladakh. The demand for the sixth schedule and statehood has gained wide support among local groups. The arrest of Sonam Wangchuk, a respected activist and educator, has further fueled anger among protesters.

For now, Ladakh remains tense, with authorities urging calm and community leaders calling for peaceful dialogue to resolve the crisis.
