Smog Returns to Delhi: AQI Crosses 400 in Several Areas Amid Fog & Calm Winds

According to the CPCB, an AQI in a range of 0-50 is considered good, 51-100 satisfactory, 101-200 moderate, 201-300 poor, 301-400 very poor, and 401-500 severe.

Delhi's air quality is getting worse day by day, reaching the 'very poor' category on Sunday due to a combination of fog and low wind speed that prevented the dispersal of pollutants, according to the Central Pollution Control Board. Several areas in the national capital have seen the AQI cross the 'severe' mark with readings beyond 400.

Delhi AQI Condition According to the CPCB-Developed Sameer App

At 7 am, the AQI stood at 377, according to the CPCB-developed Sameer app, a big jump from Saturday's 233 and Friday's 218. 

Wazirpur in north Delhi and RK Puram in south Delhi were the most polluted areas in the city, with readings of 432 and 425, respectively, both falling in the 'severe' category.

According to the CPCB, an AQI in a range of 0-50 is considered good, 51-100 satisfactory, 101-200 moderate, 201-300 poor, 301-400 very poor, and 401-500 severe.

Areas recorded high AQI on Sunday Morning

Several areas, including Burari (412), Bawana (413), Dwarka Sector-8 (407), Jahangirpuri (402), Mundka (404), Nehru Nagar (403), Punjabi Bagh (403), Pusa (404), Chandni Chowk (414), Rohini (415), Siri Fort (403), and Vivek Vihar (407), recorded their AQIs in the 'severe' category, according to CPCB's Sameer app.

Just three areas, namely NSIT Dwarka (254), IHBAS, Dilshad Garden (270), and Delhi Technological University (292), recorded 'poor' air quality levels, data showed.

The capital's primary weather station at Safdarjung recorded a visibility of 900 meters with calm winds, while Palam recorded a visibility of 1,300 meters with south-southwesterly winds at 4 kmph. On Saturday night, the AQI had dipped to 303, which falls in the 'very poor' category.

India Meteorological Department Report

According to IMD, the maximum temperature on Saturday was recorded at 30.5 degrees Celsius, three notches below the seasonal average, while the minimum temperature settled at 19.4 degrees Celsius, 3.3 notches above normal. The humidity level was at 73 percent at 5:30 pm.

The weather body has forecast shallow fog for Sunday morning, while the maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to hover at 31 and 18 degrees Celsius, respectively.
