Smog Engulfs Delhi as Air Quality Deteriorates to ‘Poor’ Levels

A layer of smog has settled over the national capital as the Air Quality Index (AQI) fell to 226, classified as ‘Poor’ according to the Central Pollution Control Board. The most severe AQI readings were recorded in the Akshardham and Anand Vihar areas, where levels reached 334, categorized as ‘Very Poor.’ AIIMS and nearby regions reported an AQI of 253, while India Gate recorded 251, also in the ‘Poor’ category.

Resident Ashish Kumar Meena expressed concerns about the rising pollution levels near Akshardham, stating, “The pollution here has increased significantly in the past two days, leading to throat choking, breathing issues, and eye irritation. After Diwali, pollution levels are likely to rise further. The government needs to take action to manage this pollution, including imposing fines on those burning waste. People with respiratory issues are particularly suffering.”

Another resident suggested greater use of public transport to help mitigate pollution: “If more people utilized public transportation and carpooling, it would reduce pollution levels in the city.”

On October 18, BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla protested at the ‘Smog Tower,’ criticizing the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for failing to address air quality issues. He accused Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal of deceiving the public regarding air pollution and claimed that the city has turned into a “gas chamber” due to political blame-shifting. “Despite promises of making Delhi pollution-free, the condition of the Yamuna and overall air quality have deteriorated. The AAP may ban firecrackers for Diwali, but the smog tower, which cost Rs 23 crore, remains locked. The party’s failure will be revealed,” Poonawalla stated.
