Tragedy struck late last night in Kathua’s Shiva Nagar area, where a devastating fire claimed six lives, including a retired Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP), and left four others injured.
The deceased have been identified as Ganga Bhagat (17), Danish Bhagat (15), Avtar Krishan (81, retired DySP), Barkha Raina (25), Takash Raina (3), and Advik Raina (4). The victims were trapped inside the house when the fire broke out.
Among the injured are Swarna, Neetu Devi, Arun Kumar, and Kewal Krishan, all of whom are undergoing treatment.
Authorities have yet to determine the cause of the blaze. The Kathua Police are investigating the incident, with forensic teams expected to join the probe.
The tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the community, with neighbors recalling the moments of chaos as flames engulfed the house. “We heard cries for help but the fire spread so fast that rescue efforts became difficult,” said a resident.
Senior police officials have assured a thorough investigation while extending to the bereaved families.
