A Sealdah court in Kolkata reprimanded the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for delaying the bail hearing of Sanjay Roy, the main accused in the alleged rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
On Friday, Judge Pamela Gupta expressed frustration when the CBI’s investigating officer and public prosecutor failed to appear on time, causing the hearing to be delayed. The judge questioned whether Roy should be granted bail due to the delay, asking, “Where are the PP and IO? Should I grant bail?”
CBI lawyer Dipak Poria arrived late and opposed Roy’s bail, arguing that releasing him could hinder the investigation. The Trinamool Congress (TMC), embroiled in a political blame game with the BJP over the case, also criticized the delay in court proceedings.
Roy, a civic volunteer with Kolkata Police, was arrested on August 10 and is in judicial custody until September 20. His defense lawyer, Kavita Sarkar, argued for bail, citing insufficient evidence from the CBI. TMC MP Saket Gokhale accused the CBI of intentionally delaying the case and criticized their efforts, suggesting a political agenda behind the delays.
The case, which has sparked nationwide outrage, will be heard by the Supreme Court on September 9. The hearing will focus on the lack of cooperation from the West Bengal government and ongoing delays in the investigation.
