SC rejects plea seeking stay on MCD elections

The Supreme Court on Friday rejected the plea to postpone the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) polls, which are set to take place on December 4.

The plea has become infructuous, according to a bench of justices led by Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Abhay S. Oka, who highlighted that the election is in three days. The Delhi High Court’s decision on November 9 to not postpone the December 4 municipal elections for Delhi (MCD) has been contested in the petition.

Concerning the delineation of the constituency for the civic elections, the National Youth Party filed the complaint.

Notably, as campaigning for the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections is scheduled to end today, party leaders will make one last ditch effort.

Several Union ministers and state chief ministers, including national president JP Nadda, participated in a significant number of roadshows to campaign for the BJP.

JP Nadda, national president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), showed optimism and claimed that people are willing to vote for the BJP because they are tired of the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) efforts.

He also criticised the AAP for failing to clean the Yamuna despite the Center giving the Kejriwal administration thousands of crores.

In the MCD, the BJP has held the reins of power since 2007.

Manish Sisodia, the deputy chief minister of Delhi and leader of the Aam Admi Party (AAP), will conduct a roadshow in Patparganj on Friday.

In an effort to boost its chances in the MCD elections, the Congress has pledged in its election platform to remove Delhi’s three landfills in 18 months, install RO water purification systems for drinking water, and pay any unpaid house taxes.

With the slogan “Delhi will be Sheila ji’s Delhi,” Congress mentions two programmes named for the former chief minister Sheila Dixit: the Sheila Dixit Gharelu Majdoor Kalyan Yojana, which provides financial aid for domestic workers, and the Sheila Dixit Swasthya Sahayatha Yojana, which offers medicines at a reduced price. Assistance for domestic employees includes financial aid in the event of accidents as well as admission for their children to MCD schools.
