SC heals Manipur’s wounds, retired Mumbai DGP to supervise probe

The Supreme Court on Monday, 7 August, took major steps to investigate the Manipur riots and take proper care of the victim-affected families. The Supreme Court has said that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into riots-related cases will be supervised by former Maharashtra DGP Dattatreya Padsalgikar. The relief works will be reviewed by a committee of three women retired judges of the High Court. Retired Judge Geeta Mittal, Justice Asha Menon and Justice Shalini Pansakar from the Jammu and Kashmir High Court will be ncluded in this committee. The Supreme Court has said that instructions have also been given to provide adequate security arrangements to the committee of women judges.
Apart from Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Mishra were included in the bench that pronounced the order in the Manipur case. It is clear from what was heard in the Manipur case that the Supreme Court is extremely unhappy with the attitude of the Manipur government and the police administration. Not only this, on the conduct of relief and rehabilitation programs being run by the central and state governments in the state, the Supreme Court has given a message by forming a committee of three retired women judges that help should reach every victim and affected family of the state and a fear-free environment should be re-established as soon as possible.
