SC denies urgent hearing on Rs 2000 note exchange plea

On Friday, the Supreme Court declined to hold an urgent hearing on a plea contesting notifications allowing the exchange of
Rs. 2000 currency notes without necessitating a requisition slip or identification proof. The bench, comprised of Justices Aniruddha Bose and Rajesh Bindal, reviewed the registry’s report and concluded that the matter lacked immediate urgency. The court decided to postpone the issue for consideration by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud after the summer recess. The petition was brought forward by Advocate Ashwini Upadhyay, who expressed disappointment over the court’s decision not to prioritise what he deemed as a critical matter. The Supreme Court responded by emphasising the need for closure and reminded that the court is a judicial body, not a public platform.
This marks the second time the Supreme Court has refused to expedite a hearing on this matter. On June 1, it declined Upadhyay’s request to list his plea for an urgent hearing during the summer break. Upadhyay had previously argued that the exchange of Rs. 2000 banknotes without requiring a requisition slip or an ID proof like Aadhaar was enabling illicit activities by criminals and terrorists.
