Sanjay Roy Claims Former Kolkata Police Commissioner Framed Him in RG Kar Rape Case; Governor Seeks Clarification

West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose has requested a report from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee regarding the RG Kar hospital rape and murder case, following serious allegations made by the prime accused, Sanjay Roy.

On Tuesday evening, the Governor asked the state government to investigate the claims made by Roy, who has accused former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal of being involved in framing him for the crime. Roy alleges that Goyal masterminded the case against him, claiming he was falsely implicated.

A statement issued by Raj Bhavan on X (formerly Twitter) confirmed that Governor Bose has urged the state government to clarify the factual details and provide their stance on the matter as soon as possible.

The statement read, “In light of disturbing reports from November 12, 2024, regarding the RG Kar alleged rape and murder case, where the key accused, Sanjay Roy, reportedly claimed during proceedings at the Sealdah Court on November 11 that he was framed by senior police officers, including former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal, the Governor has requested an immediate investigation and report from the state government.”

Sanjay Roy, accused of raping and murdering a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College, shouted at reporters outside the Sealdah Court, alleging that Goyal had conspired to frame him. “It was Vineet Goyal who set me up… They threatened me, and other high-ranking officers were involved,” Roy said.

The body of the junior doctor was found in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College on August 9, and the autopsy confirmed that she had been raped and murdered. Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police, was arrested as the prime suspect. Charges were officially framed against him by the Sealdah Court nearly two months after his arrest.
