Violent clashes in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, during a court-ordered survey of the Mughal-era Jama Masjid have left three dead and dozens injured, including over 20 police personnel. The unrest, sparked by claims that the mosque was once a temple, prompted stone-pelting and arson, with police using tear gas and batons to control the mob.
The violence erupted when a court-mandated survey team began work at the Shahi Jama Masjid on Sunday morning. Protesters gathered, raising slogans, pelting stones, and setting vehicles ablaze. The situation escalated as gunshots reportedly targeted police officers, prompting a stronger response from law enforcement.
The survey was ordered by a local court following a petition by senior advocate Vishnu Shanker Jain, claiming that the mosque stands on the site of an ancient Harihar temple. The survey team, accompanied by an Advocate Commission, was tasked with conducting videography and photography of the site.
Congress called on the people of Sambhal to resist the “politics of hatred” and protect their rights through legal means. The party reiterated the need for unity and harmony amidst growing tensions.
As the situation remains tense, heightened security measures and ongoing investigations aim to restore order in Sambhal.
