RG Kar’s Former Principal Sandip Ghosh Remanded To Judicial Custody Until Sept 23 In Financial Misconduct Case

A Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court has remanded Sandip Ghosh, former principal of RG Kar Medical College, to judicial custody until September 23. Ghosh faces allegations of financial irregularities during his tenure.

Additionally, the court placed Ghosh’s security guard, Afsar Ali, and contractors Biplab Sinha and Suman Hazra in judicial custody until September 23. The CBI indicated it may request further custody if necessary.

Amid ongoing protests over the rape and murder of a doctor, the CBI continues to investigate the financial misconduct and its possible connection to the victim’s death.

Kolkata Rape-Murder: Sandip Ghosh Under Investigation

A month ago, the body of a female doctor, who had been raped and murdered, was discovered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Investigators have struggled to piece together the sequence of events leading to the crime, revealing further issues within the hospital.

On August 13, the CBI took over the case from Kolkata Police, following an order from the Calcutta High Court. It was revealed that former principal Dr. Sandip Ghosh had instructed the demolition of a restroom and toilet near the crime scene on August 10. This partial demolition, carried out by the Public Works Department, is suspected to have destroyed crucial evidence.

As the investigation deepened, further allegations emerged, including claims of financial misconduct under Ghosh’s leadership. Dr. Akhtar Ali, former deputy superintendent, filed a petition urging the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to probe Ghosh’s alleged financial mismanagement. Dr. Ali also speculated that the doctor’s death could be linked to her knowledge of the corruption, suggesting she might have threatened to expose it.

On August 23, the Calcutta High Court transferred the financial irregularities case from the state’s Special Investigation Team (SIT) to the CBI. Following several days of questioning, Ghosh was arrested on September 2 for his alleged involvement in financial misconduct.
