The father of the 31-year-old doctor who was raped and murdered at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata wept bitterly as the verdict was announced at a Sealdah court on Saturday. The main accused in the case, Sanjay Roy, was found guilty of abduction and murder, more than five months after the crime that shocked the nation.
Roy, a former Kolkata Police constable, was convicted by the Criminal Procedure Code (CRC) of abduction and murder under Sections 66 and 103(1). On August 9, 2024, the body of the deceased was found in a classroom and Roy was remanded in custody. The sentencing hearing will be held on Monday.
As the judge announced the guilty verdict, the victim’s father thanked the court for the verdict and thanked Justice Anirban Das for restoring his faith in the system. However, Sanjay Roy maintained his innocence and told the court that he was framed.
“I did not do this. Whoever did this will be fired. I was framed,” Roy said. He also ordered, “I will always wear a bodhi seed necklace around my neck. If I commit a crime, my necklace will break at the scene of the crime. I cannot do such a crime.”
Despite Roy’s plea, the court assured him that he would be given a chance to speak before deciding his sentence on Monday.
Meanwhile, the probe into the alleged financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College has also raised concerns, with several people named in the chargesheet filed by the CBI, including former director Sandip Ghosh. Earlier, the Central Bureau of Investigation had conducted a polygraph test on Ghosh and questioned him about his involvement in the murder. However, his family questioned the thoroughness of the investigation.
The victim’s father expressed his dissatisfaction with the CBI’s handling of the case. “The CBI has not done anything in this matter. There is no question of its effectiveness here. We have filed several cases before the Calcutta High Court and the Supreme Court,” he said. The father added that they will continue to seek justice and hope that the perpetrator is brought to justice.
“It’s not just one, from the DNA results there are four men and one woman. We are relieved when the perpetrator is convicted. “We will keep knocking on the court’s door until we get justice,” said the victim’s father. The door is seeking support from people across the country.
