A powerful explosion near the Red Fort Metro Station in Delhi on Monday evening killed at least eight people and injured several others, sending shockwaves throughout the national capital.
The blast near Gate No. 1 of the Lal Qila Metro Station triggered immediate emergency action along with a high alert in Delhi, Mumbai and districts of Uttar Pradesh. Security agencies are investigating the cause while authorities have stepped up vigilance across the country.
What is the Incident: A Blast That Shook Old Delhi
Eyewitnesses described the explosion as sudden and terrifying. The blast occurred in a parked car a Swift Dzire around 6:52 p.m., creating panic among commuters and bystanders near the busy metro station.
Flames engulfed nearby vehicles and thick smoke filled the air. Firefighters and police rushed to the spot within minutes, deploying seven fire tenders to control the blaze. According to the Delhi Fire Services and LNJP Hospital, eight people were confirmed dead and twelve others injured. Several of the wounded remain in critical condition.

Emergency Response & Investigation
Deputy Chief Fire Officer A.K. Malik confirmed that fire teams managed to contain the blaze by 7:30 p.m. The area was quickly sealed off with Delhi Police, National Security Guard (NSG) and National Investigation Agency (NIA) teams taking over the site for forensic examination.
Preliminary findings suggest the explosion originated from within the car, though officials have not yet confirmed whether it was an accident or an act of terror. The Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) is analyzing residue samples to determine the cause.
Nationwide Security Alert
After the incident, not only Delhi but all of Mumbai and major districts of Uttar Pradesh were put on high alert. The police have intensified night patrols in crowded and sensitive areas, including major transport hubs and marketplaces.

Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha said the blast took place when a slow-moving vehicle came to a stop at a traffic light. He elaborated that investigations were being conducted with the involvement of several agencies and updates were being shared with the Union Home Ministry.
The incident has been brought to the notice of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who spoke to Home Minister Amit Shah. Both have asked for detailed reports from the security agencies, asking them to ensure no lapses in public safety.
