RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das Admitted to Hospital

RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das has been admitted to Apollo Hospital in Chennai due to health concerns on Tuesday.

Hospital officials confirmed that his condition is not critical and does not qualify as an emergency. However, they have not released further details about his health.

RBI Official Provides Update

An RBI official reassured the public, stating, “He is fine and nothing concerning. We will issue a formal statement soon.” Additionally, an RBI spokesperson clarified, “Governor Das experienced acidity and was admitted for observation. He is doing fine and will be discharged in 2-3 hours. There is no cause for concern.”

Government Considers Extending Das’s Term

In related news, the Indian government is reportedly considering extending Das’s tenure as RBI Governor for a second term, according to a Reuters report. This move would make him the longest-serving RBI chief since the 1960s, marking a historic moment.

Shaktikanta Das’s Leadership

Das, a trusted figure in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government, became RBI Governor in December 2018. His appointment came at a time when relations between the central bank and the government were strained. Under his leadership, the RBI has stabilized, navigating through challenging situations.

Impact of a Potential Extension

Das’s current term ends on December 10. He has already served beyond the typical five-year tenure seen in recent years. If the extension is granted, he will surpass the records of previous governors and match the tenure of Benegal Rama Rau, who served for 7.5 years from 1949 to 1957.

No Alternative Candidates

Two government sources confirmed that no alternative candidates are being considered, and no selection committee has been formed. As a result, a one-year extension for Das is highly probable, reflecting strong confidence in his leadership.
