In an extremely rare medical case, doctors in Maharashtra’s Buldhana detected a fetus growing inside the stomach of an unborn baby. This condition, known as foetus-in-fetu, is an exceptionally rare congenital anomaly, with only around 200 documented cases worldwide and just 15-20 reported in India.
The case came to light when a 32-year-old pregnant woman underwent a routine sonography at a government hospital. Doctors were stunned to find an undeveloped fetus inside the abdomen of the unborn child, a condition that had gone undetected in earlier scans due to its extreme rarity.
Medical Experts Confirm the Condition
Gynaecologists and medical experts carefully re-examined the images to confirm the anomaly. “At first, I was surprised by the discovery. After thorough analysis and consultations with other doctors, we confirmed that it was indeed a case of foetus-in-fetu,” said one of the specialists involved in the diagnosis.
Doctors believe this condition arises due to an abnormal development of identical twins, where one fetus becomes trapped within the other during early gestation. Since the parasitic twin cannot survive independently, it remains inside the host fetus, often undetected until late in pregnancy or after birth.
What Lies Ahead for the Mother and Baby
Despite this rare complication, medical experts have assured that the mother is likely to have a normal delivery. However, the newborn may require immediate medical attention after birth to address the condition.
While the exact cause remains unclear, cases like these provide valuable insights into fetal development and medical anomalies. Doctors are closely monitoring the case, and further medical intervention will be decided based on the baby’s condition post-delivery.
