Rajya Sabha Set for Heated Constitution Debate Amid No-Confidence Motion Row

The Rajya Sabha is set to begin a two-day debate on the Constitution today, against the backdrop of the ongoing no-confidence motion against Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar. This debate comes amid a tense parliamentary session, with the Opposition’s no-confidence motion adding fuel to the fire.

BJP leaders JP Nadda and Amit Shah are expected to lead the discussion. The debate, scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, follows heated exchanges in the Lok Sabha regarding the Constitution and comes at a time when the opposition has filed a no-confidence motion accusing Dhankhar of biased conduct.

Union Health Minister JP Nadda will kick off the debate at 11 a.m. today, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah set to respond. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to address the House on Tuesday. Other key BJP figures like Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Hardeep Singh Puri, Sudhanshu Trivedi, Bhupendra Yadav, and Brijlal will also participate in the debate.

The Constitution debate has been a major demand from the opposition during the Winter Session. However, parliamentary proceedings have been disrupted by several issues, including the Adani controversy, the George Soros allegations, and the no-confidence motion against Dhankhar.

Last week, the Rajya Sabha witnessed significant uproar and multiple adjournments due to the no-confidence motion. The session was cut short after intense exchanges between Dhankhar and Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge. In response, Dhankhar remarked, “This is not a campaign against me but against the farmer community to which I belong. As a farmer’s son, I will not show weakness.”

Trinamool Congress leader Derek O’Brien blamed the BJP for the disruptions and called for the House to function smoothly. He emphasized that the opposition wanted the debate on the Constitution to proceed and discussions to focus on issues impacting the people.

The Lok Sabha concluded its Constitution debate on December 14, with opposition parties accusing the BJP government of undermining the Constitution. In his response, Prime Minister Modi criticized Congress for “mutilating the Constitution” for political gain, asserting that his government’s policies align with the Constitution’s vision of strengthening India’s unity and democracy.

The Rajya Sabha debate, taking place on December 16 and 17, is expected to be highly contentious, with both sides preparing for a fierce showdown.
