Railway Ministry Prepares for Kumbh Mela with Extensive Plans

The Railway Ministry is making comprehensive arrangements for the upcoming Kumbh Mela, set to take place in Prayagraj starting January 12. The ministry plans to operate 992 special trains and allocate a budget of ₹933 crore to enhance infrastructure and facilities for the event.

Anticipated Attendance and Infrastructure Development

The Kumbh Mela is expected to draw between 30 to 50 crore devotees, as reported by Financial Express. To facilitate smooth travel for these pilgrims, the Railway Ministry is working on doubling railway tracks in the Prayagraj area, with an estimated investment of ₹3,700 crore. This upgrade aims to improve train operations, particularly during the event’s peak days.

Continuous Coordination and Preparedness

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, along with deputies Ravneet Singh Bittu and V. Somanna, is actively engaging with senior railway officials to ensure effective coordination. Regular meetings are being held to keep all stakeholders informed and to take necessary actions in anticipation of the expected increase in passenger numbers.

Lessons from Past Events

In light of the 2019 Kumbh Mela, which attracted over 24 crore attendees, the ministry has increased the number of special trains by 42 percent compared to the last event. This decision reflects their proactive strategy to address transportation demands.

Significant Investments in Infrastructure

Beyond the special trains, the Railway Ministry is investing substantially in infrastructure upgrades. Approximately ₹440 crore will be allocated for constructing road overbridges, while ₹495 crore will be directed toward road repairs, the installation of CCTV cameras, and the enhancement of accommodations, waiting areas, and medical facilities at railway stations.

Progress on Rail Line Doubling

Railway officials have reported that the doubling of rail lines between Varanasi and Jhusi has already been completed, showcasing notable progress in their preparations. Additionally, the completion of the Dedicated Freight Corridor is expected to alleviate pressure on existing railway lines and enhance the efficiency of passenger trains.

With these extensive plans and infrastructure enhancements, the Railway Ministry is well-equipped to accommodate millions of devotees during the Kumbh Mela, ensuring a safe and efficient travel experience for all attendees.
