Rahul Gandhi Takes Uber Ride, Highlights Gig Workers’ Struggles

New Delhi: Congress MP and leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, recently shed light on the challenges faced by gig workers in India. On Monday, Gandhi took an Uber ride in New Delhi and shared his experience, emphasizing the urgent need to address the difficulties that gig workers face daily.

Gandhi Takes an Uber Ride

Rahul Gandhi posted a video on social media, documenting his conversation with Sunil Upadhyay, an Uber driver from Etah, Uttar Pradesh. The video, lasting over 11 minutes, shows Gandhi booking the ride through the Uber app and engaging in a candid conversation with Upadhyay about the struggles of gig workers like him.

Highlighting the Challenges

During the ride, Upadhyay spoke openly about the hardships he endures, including low pay rates, lack of social security, and the constant struggle to make ends meet in Delhi. He expressed concerns about his future, mentioning that the rising cost of living and meager earnings might force him to return to his village.

Gandhi also shared the video on his social media account, writing in Hindi, “Aamdani kam aur mehengai se nikalta dum – ye hai Bharat ke gig workers ki vyatha,” which translates to “Low income and inflation are ruining lives — this is the plight of India’s gig workers.”

Congress’s Promise to Gig Workers

Rahul Gandhi assured Upadhyay and his family that the Congress-led state governments would take concrete steps to address the issues faced by gig workers. He emphasized the party’s commitment to creating policies that would provide social security and better working conditions for cab drivers, delivery agents, and other gig workers across the country.

Lunch with the Driver’s Family

The day after the ride, Gandhi met with Upadhyay’s family for lunch at a restaurant in Delhi. He discussed their concerns further and reiterated his pledge to push for policies that would support gig workers.

Gandhi stated that the INDIA “Janabandhan” alliance would work to implement these policies nationwide, ensuring that gig workers receive the justice and support they deserve.

Conclusion

Rahul Gandhi’s interaction with the Uber driver brings attention to the challenges faced by millions of gig workers in India. His commitment to addressing these issues through policy changes under Congress-led governments reflects the party’s focus on social justice and economic security for all workers in the country.
