The driver of Rahul Gandhi’s SUV has been booked for an accident that took place on August 19 in Nawada, Bihar. The vehicle allegedly hit a police constable during the ongoing Voter Adhikar Yatra. The injured constable, Mahesh Kumar, suffered a leg fracture.
Officials said the driver’s details have not yet been made public. Superintendent of Police Abhinav Dhiman confirmed that further information will be shared soon.
SP Clarifies It Was Not a Run-Over Case
Earlier, SP Abhinav Dhiman told reporters that the constable tripped in front of a convoy vehicle, which “barely brushed against his feet.” He said, “It was not that the constable got run over by the vehicle.” However, doctors at a Nawada hospital confirmed that Kumar sustained a fracture.

Mahesh Kumar was part of the security detail for the yatra. He was attached as a personal security officer to the Nawada sub-divisional police officer.
Viral Video Shows Cop Limping Away
A video of the incident went viral on social media. It showed the constable limping away after being freed from under the SUV’s wheels. Several online users claimed he was “critically injured,” but police clarified his condition was stable.
Rahul Gandhi was seen handing over a water bottle to his supporters to help the injured officer. He also walked up to the policeman to check on his health.
BJP Targets Congress Over Incident
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) launched a sharp attack on the Congress following the incident. Party spokesperson Shehzad Poonawala alleged that the constable was “crushed” by the convoy vehicle. He mocked the Congress yatra, calling it the “Crush Janta Yatra.”

The Congress, however, has not issued an official statement yet.
The Voter Adhikar Yatra, led by Rahul Gandhi and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, has been drawing large crowds in Bihar. With the SUV incident gaining traction online, political debate around the march has intensified.
