Whether Rahul Gandhi will marry now or not was a question that popped up again in Srinagar, this time at an interaction with women students. Over the years, Gandhi has given at least four or five different responses, ranging from “when the right girl comes along” to being “married to the party” and being “completely entangled in party work.”
The inevitable question was fielded during the recent conversation on topics covering politics, education, and employment.
Replying to a question about his impressions on marriage, the 54-year-old leader smiled and answered, “Now, that is pressure. 20-30 years I have outlasted that, but it’s a good thing really.”
When asked if he had any plans to get married, Gandhi said, “Yeah, yeah. I mean, I don’t plan it. But if it happens.”
Students then further demanded an invitation to his wedding, to which he promised, “I will. I will.”
This isn’t the first time the topic has come up. Early this year, she had got him to respond on the same question from the crowds while he was speaking at a rally in Raebareli. He had humorously said, “Ab jaldi karni padegi (Will have to do it soon now).”
Last June, at an opposition function in Patna, Lalu Yadav had even advised Gandhi to get married, telling her, “Shaadi kariye, hum log baraati chalenge (Get married, we would like to be part of your wedding procession).” Gandhi had responded, “Now, with that said, it will happen.”
In yet another, from as far back as last October, a student from Jaipur’s Maharani College shot him the question: ‘Why did you never think of being married or why didn’t you raise a family?’ to which he shot back: “Because I am completely entangled in my work and in the Congress party.”
