Rahul dubs Assam floods as heartbreaking, says he is their soldier in Parliament and urges Centre to provide.help to state

Guwahati: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday expressed condolences to the people who died due to devastating floods in Assam, dubbing it “heartbreaking.” He stated that he stands with the people of the northeastern state as their soldier in Parliament, urging the Central government to swiftly provide all necessary assistance and support to Assam.

In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Rahul Gandhi, newly appointed Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, said, “The extreme devastation caused by flooding in Assam is heartbreaking, with innocent children like 8-year-old Avinash being taken away from us. My heartfelt condolences to all the bereaved families across the state.”

He mentioned that Assam Congress leaders briefed him on the ground situation, highlighting figures such as over 60 deaths, more than 53,000 displaced individuals, and 2.4 million affected by the floods.

“These numbers reflect gross and serious mismanagement by BJP’s double-engine government, which promised a ‘flood-free Assam’ upon coming to power. Assam urgently requires a comprehensive and compassionate approach—proper relief, rehabilitation, and compensation in the short term, and establishment of a pan-Northeast water management authority for long-term flood control,” he emphasized.

“I stand in solidarity with the people of Assam, and as their representative in Parliament, I urge the Central government to extend immediate and robust assistance to the state,” he concluded.

Rahul Gandhi made these remarks following his visit to the Hmar relief camp at Thalai, Youth Care Centre, Fulertal in Assam, where he met with flood-affected people. Assam Congress unit’s President Bhupen Borah led a team that submitted a memorandum to him, urging parliamentary action on Assam’s perennial flood issues.
