Protests in Shimla Over Alleged Illegal Construction of Sanjauli Mosque

On Wednesday, protestors, including members of various Hindu organizations, gathered in the Dhalli area of Shimla to demonstrate against the alleged illegal construction of a mosque in the Sanjauli area. The protestors, waving tricolors and chanting slogans such as “Himachal Ne Thana Hai, Devbhoomi Ko Bachana Hai” and “Bharat Mata Ki Jai,” voiced their concerns about the mosque.

The protests, organized by Hindu groups, have sparked a debate over whether the issue is being politicized. Naresh Chauhan, Media Advisor to the Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, stated that the BJP is trying to frame the situation as a Hindu-Muslim issue, but he emphasized that it is fundamentally a matter of law and order. He accused the BJP of seeking to exploit the situation for political gain and assured that any necessary actions regarding unauthorized construction would be taken by the government. Chauhan noted that the Chief Minister has committed to addressing any illegal constructions, and stressed that the government is monitoring outsiders to prevent any potential disruptions.

Leader of the Opposition in Himachal Pradesh Assembly, Jairam Thakur, criticized the Sukhu government for its perceived inaction on the alleged illegal construction. He expressed concern over the government’s delay in addressing the issue, which he believes has led to public agitation. Thakur emphasized the need to respect the sentiments of Hindus and local residents, and urged that the matter be resolved promptly while allowing peaceful protests within legal limits.

Earlier on the day of the protest, heavy police presence was established at the Dhalli tunnel in Shimla, with officers inspecting vehicles to ensure the safety of the demonstration.
