Indian Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned from office on Monday evening, citing health reasons and the imperative of putting his well-being first. President Droupadi Murmu accepted the resignation on Tuesday. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) released a gazette notification affirming that the resignation shall take effect from the date of resignation itself under Article 67(a) of the Constitution.

Jagdeep Dhankhar's resignation came two years earlier than the constitutionally mandated date for the end of his five-year term. PM Narendra Modi wished Dhankhar well and complimented his public service. With the Vice President's position vacant, the Election Commission will soon be issuing a new poll schedule.

Resignation Cited Health Priorities

In a short and official letter to the President, Jagdeep Dhankhar expressed his desire to resign "to prioritize health care and follow medical advice." The letter, filed late on Monday, cited Article 67(a) of the Constitution under which the Vice President can resign by sending a letter to the President of India.  The move came as a surprise, with many in the political and administrative corridors taken aback.

MHA Issues Gazette Notification

President Murmu accepted the resignation on Tuesday. The Ministry of Home Affairs immediately informed the public by way of an official gazette. BJP MP Ghanshyam Tiwari, who was in the Chair during the Rajya Sabha session, read out the notification and formally announced the acceptance of the resignation.

He said the MHA had communicated the decision under constitutional provisions with effect from the date of communication.

PM Modi Responds, Applauds Service

PM Narendra Modi expressed appreciation for Dhankhar’s contributions. In a message on X, he wrote, “Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar Ji has got many opportunities to serve our country in various capacities, including as the Vice President of India.

Wishing him good health.” The message reflected both respect and concern as Dhankhar steps away from active public service due to health challenges.

Vice Presidential Post Vacant, EC Expected to Act Soon

With the Vice President's seat now vacant, the constitutional process will roll out in double-quick time. The Election Commission of India is likely to announce the election schedule in the next few days.

Under Article 68 of the Constitution, an election to fill the vacancy has to be held within six months. The new Vice President will then hold the remaining part of the five-year term as of the date of taking office.

According to procedural rules, the Deputy Chairman or another senior member may temporarily assume the duties of the Vice President, who serves as the Rajya Sabha's ex officio Chairman.

Political Legacy of Jagdeep Dhankhar

After being elected in 2022, Jagdeep Dhankhar, a seasoned BJP leader and former West Bengal governor, contributed his legal expertise and sharp wit to the vice president's office during debates. Known for his aggressive stance as Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, Dhankhar often promoted proactive parliamentary work and procedural discipline.

His sudden resignation midway through his second year in office is a watershed moment in Indian political history. It serves as a reminder that unexpected and unexpected personal health issues can take precedence over even the highest constitutional obligations. The political establishment will keep a close eye on parties as they prepare to shortlist candidates for the country's second-highest constitutional office.
