President Droupadi Murmu attends the India Smart Cities Conclave 2023 in MP’s Indore

On Wednesday, President Droupadi Murmu attended the India Smart Cities Conclave 2023 held in the Indore district of Madhya Pradesh. The President spoke at the event and stated, “According to an assessment, over 50% of our population would reside in urban areas by the year 2047, and that cities would collectively contribute over 80% of GDP by that time. We must create a roadmap for the future and follow it, keeping in mind the expanding needs and aspirations of cities and their inhabitants.

Climate change is a significant topic that comes up in every conversation about sustainable development, regardless of level. In this regard, one example of how cities can address climate change at the federal level is the Climate Smart Cities Assessment Framework, which was introduced for India’s 100 smart cities. Green buildings and renewable energy are being emphasized for energy efficiency in cities, but the President said more work needs to be done on a more comprehensive level in these areas. She continued, “We must work toward the Sustainable Development Goals in order to achieve our goals. Making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable is the aim of SDG 11. This objective emphasizes the significance of inclusive and holistic city development.

The President further said, “The management of cities has an important role in pursuing the priority of sustainable development. Therefore, we should learn from the best practices and business models of the world’s best-managed cities and also share our successful efforts with other countries.”
Collaboration at local and global level is essential for overall and sustainable development, she added.
