Former Karnataka Director General of Police (DGP), Praveen Sood, assumed his new role as the Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday.
The seasoned 1986-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, belonging to the Karnataka cadre, has stepped in as the successor to Subodh Kumar Jaiswal, whose two-year tenure as the head of the CBI concluded today. Praveen Sood, hailing from the 1986 batch of IPS officers from the Karnataka Cadre, has officially taken the reins as the Director of the esteemed Central Bureau of Investigation. Prior to his appointment, Sood served as the Director General of Police in Karnataka.
With an illustrious career spanning nearly 37 years in the IPS, Sood has held several pivotal positions. Notably, he worked as an advisor to the Government of Mauritius and oversaw the investigation of high-profile cases involving individuals with significant wealth. His expertise extends to cases with inter-state and international ramifications, as well as the detection and investigation of cybercrime and other forms of criminal activity related to information technology. One of Sood’s notable contributions was his involvement in the enhancement of the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network & Systems (CCTNS) and the Interoperable Criminal Justice System (ICJS) networks in Karnataka, in collaboration with the judiciary. These initiatives aimed to strengthen law enforcement and streamline the criminal justice system within the state.
In terms of education, Praveen Sood holds a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Delhi. He also obtained a Postgraduate degree in Public Policy & Management from the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Bengaluru, as well as from the Maxwell School of Governance at Syracuse University in New York. Sood’s exceptional service and dedication to his profession have been recognized with prestigious accolades. In 2011, he was honoured with the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service, and in 2002, he was awarded the Police Medal for Meritorious Service. Shortly after assuming his new position, Director Praveen Sood engaged with the officers of the CBI, fostering communication and setting the stage for his tenure at the helm of the organisation.
