Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday praised US President Donald Trump’s efforts toward peace in Gaza. He noted that recent developments, including the potential release of Israeli hostages by Hamas, are an important step in restoring stability in the region.

Modi’s Statement on Gaza Peace

In a post on X, PM Modi said, “We welcome President Trump’s leadership as peace efforts in Gaza make decisive progress. Indications of the release of hostages mark a significant step forward. India will continue to strongly support all efforts towards a durable and just peace.”

The Indian government has expressed its support for all diplomatic initiatives aimed at ending the ongoing conflict in Gaza, emphasizing the need for a peaceful and just resolution.

Trump Orders Reduction in Israeli Attacks

Following Hamas’ acceptance of certain elements of Trump’s peace plan, President Trump instructed Israel to halt bombings in the Gaza Strip. Hamas has shown willingness to release hostages and hand over power to other Palestinian authorities, although some parts of the plan require further discussion among Palestinian groups.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said Israel is preparing for “immediate implementation” of the first stage of the plan. Israeli media reported that military activity in Gaza will be reduced as part of the plan’s initial execution.

Background of the Conflict

The hostilities in Gaza escalated after the October 7, 2023, attack led by Hamas, which resulted in the deaths of around 1,200 Israelis and the taking of 251 hostages. Israel claims that 48 hostages remain in Gaza, including 20 who are still alive.

The ongoing Israeli military campaign has caused severe humanitarian crises. Gaza health authorities report that over 66,000 people, mostly civilians, have died, while widespread destruction and restricted aid have triggered famine conditions in parts of the enclave.

India’s Position on Peace Efforts

India has consistently supported peaceful resolutions in the Middle East. PM Modi’s statement signals India’s endorsement of diplomatic initiatives and its hope that international efforts will lead to a sustainable peace in Gaza.

As negotiations continue, the international community watches closely. Trump’s peace plan and the potential release of hostages are seen as crucial steps in reducing tensions and preventing further humanitarian suffering in Gaza.
