On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be inaugurating two landmark infrastructure projects in Rohini to decongest the capital city and link the region better. The projects, estimated to have a cost of almost ₹11,000 crore, are the Delhi section of the Dwarka Expressway and Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II).
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the two projects were jointly conceived as part of a bigger program to relieve some of Delhi’s incessant and heavy traffic burden and enable commuters to travel more quickly, safely and sustainably.
Project Highlights
The more significant of the two projects is 76 km long UER-II, which is also referred to as Delhi’s third Ring Road, at an estimated cost of ₹6,445 crores. When commissioned, UER-II will act as a major bypass linking IGI Airport and Gurugram with North and West Delhi thereby taking off pressure from the existing city roads.

Simultaneously, sections of the Dwarka Expressway will be inaugurated, including a 10.1-kilometer section in Delhi with a 5.1-kilometer tunnel providing direct connectivity to Indira Gandhi International Airport. This section would be in continuation of the 29 kilometers of Haryana part inaugurated earlier in March 2024.
A Move Towards Decongestion and Connectivity
Work on these two corridors is expected to substantially relieve the chokepoints on major highways NH-48, NH-44, the Ring Road and Barapullah flyover. Commuting from Noida and Ghaziabad to IGI Airport will be made much easier, while great alleviation will be afforded to Delhi-Gurugram from endless traffic jams.

UER-II, as pointed out by NHAI officials, is envisaged to connect with various expressways such as Delhi-Dehradun, Delhi-Meerut, Yamuna and Noida-Greater Noida corridors, thus becoming a backbone of the NCR growing transportation network.
Sustainability and Innovation
UER-II is unique due to eco-friendly construction. Nearly 10 lakh metric tons of landfill waste were used up through biomining during its construction, showcasing the government push towards sustainable infrastructure.

The project also promises faster connectivity from Haryana and Rajasthan towards Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir and Uttarakhand bypassing the already-choked city routes.
Towards Transforming Future of Mobility
Through the inauguration of the two mega projects, the government intends to set a paradigm for urban planning and movement in NCR. In the words of Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik, these highways are much more than road constructions of concrete; they are manifestations of efficiency, connectivity and the vision of a modern India.
With smooth airport access, swift travel times, and integrated connectivity, the projects will likely transform the commuter experience of millions in and around Delhi.
