Prime Minister Narendra Modi will on Saturday (September 20) open the world-class Mumbai International Cruise Terminal (MICT). The mega terminal is expected to place Mumbai in the league of global cruise destination hubs, thereby contributing to the nation’s tourism and maritime economy growth.
The MICT is spread across 415,000 square feet and is India’s biggest cruise terminal. It is even planned to handle 1 million passengers per year. It has been constructed under the ‘Cruise Bharat Mission’ to upgrade India’s maritime facility and provide a hassle-free travel experience to tourists.
What’s So Special About The Cruise Terminal?
The cruise terminal will be strategically located near landmark Mumbai locations such as Colaba and the Gateway of India. It will be a major tourist destination and provide the general public with a novel experience of water-based travel.
The project, valued at Rs 556 crore, was inaugurated by the shipping minister of financial capital, Sarbananda Sonowal, in April this year. The project has been built on a joint venture between Ballard Pier Port Pvt Ltd and JM Baxi and Co with a backstop of a 30-year concession agreement.
The terminal can transport between 10,000 and 15,000 passengers on a single day. It also has the capability of handling five cruise ships at one berth, up to 300 meters in length and 11 meters in draft. It is also fitted with 72 check-in and immigration counters so that tourists do not face any hassle.
Sonowal had earlier said the project aligns with PM Modi’s vision of transforming India into a global cruise hub by attracting international tourists and contributing to the nation’s economic growth.
