Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch ‘Mission Mausam’ today, (January 14) to mark the 150th Foundation Day of the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The Prime Minister will also address the gathering at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi.
Mission Mausam: Aiming for a Weather-Ready Nation
‘Mission Mausam’ aims to make India ‘Weather-ready and Climate-smart’. It plans to achieve this by developing advanced weather technologies. This includes high-resolution atmospheric observations, next-generation radars, satellites, and high-performance computers. The mission will also focus on improving the understanding of weather and climate processes. Additionally, it will provide air quality data to aid weather management and long-term interventions.
IMD Vision-2047: Strengthening Weather Resilience
During the event, Prime Minister Modi will also release the IMD Vision-2047 document. This document outlines strategies for weather resilience and climate change adaptation. It includes plans for improved weather forecasting, better weather management, and climate change mitigation.
Commemorating 150 Years of IMD Service
To celebrate IMD’s 150th Foundation Day, several events, activities, and workshops are planned. These will highlight IMD’s achievements over the years. The events will also showcase how IMD has contributed to making India climate-resilient and supported weather and climate services.
