After the shocking resignation of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his good wishes and recognised Dhankhar’s dedicated service to the nation on Monday.
PM Modi wrote on his microblogging platform X, “Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar Ji has got many opportunities to serve our country in various capacities, including as the Vice President of India. Wishing him good health.”
The message comes a day after Dhankhar, 74, stepped down, citing medical grounds. He said, “To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as Vice President of India, effective immediately, following Article 67(a) of the Constitution.”
Other Political Leaders’ Reactions
Leaders from various parties have raised concerns over Dhankhar’s unexpected resignation, questioning the sudden move and pointing to possible deeper reasons.
Hailing Dhankhar as a true nationalist, Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal said, “These were his good qualities. He is a nationalist and a patriot. He wanted the opposition and the government to work together so that India’s standing in the world could be elevated.”
“We have to accept that and move forward. I did not feel nice. I had very good ties with him. There was no ill feeling. He used to speak his mind and not keep things in his heart. Though our ideologies did not match, he never kept things in his heart. When I wanted to have more time to speak in the Rajya Sabha, he used to give me more time,” he added.
AIMIM leader Waris Pathan said, “I saw that the Vice President of India, Jagdeep Dhankhar, has submitted his resignation. He wrote to the president of India. He gave medical reasons for this. We can only pray that his health improves quickly.”
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Anand Dubey said, “The news of the Vice President resigning due to health reasons is worrying. We wish him well. But, a question arises that today was the first day of the monsoon session, and his resignation on the same day is worrying.”
Dhankar’s Shocking Resignation
Dhankhar’s resignation is a sudden end to his five-year term, which began in August 2022 and was set to run through August 2027, shortening his Vice President and Chairman of Rajya Sabha term.
His resignation on the first day of the Monsoon Session has created a flurry of speculation, with no further information released regarding his health condition in the resignation letter.
