Life and Legacy of Guru Tegh Bahadur
Guru Tegh Bahadur, born on April 1, 1621, in Amritsar, was the youngest son of Guru Hargobind. He became the ninth Sikh Guru in 1665 and served the community until his execution in 1675. Known as a brave and principled warrior, he was also a respected spiritual scholar and poet. A total of 115 of his hymns are included in the Guru Granth Sahib, the central scripture of Sikhism.
Martyrdom and Historical Significance
Guru Tegh Bahadur was executed in Delhi on the orders of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb for standing up against religious persecution and defending the rights of the oppressed. Gurdwara Sis Ganj Sahib and Gurdwara Rakab Ganj Sahib in Delhi mark the locations related to his execution and cremation. His martyrdom is observed every year on November 24 as Shaheedi Diwas.
Public Holiday to Honour the Guru Tegh Bahadur Sacrifice
Shaheedi Diwas is observed in several parts of India, especially in Punjab and Delhi, to remember Guru Tegh Bahadur’s sacrifice for religious freedom and human dignity. The government has announced that all state government offices, schools, and educational institutions will remain closed on November 25 in recognition of his contribution and commitment to protecting the oppressed in the 17th century.
