In a scathing address to NDA lawmakers on Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took sharp aim at the Opposition for triggering a debate on Operation Sindoor in Parliament, calling it a “self-goal” that brought national security, his strong turf, to center stage.
The remarks came during a closed-door meeting with NDA members where a resolution was unanimously passed lauding the Indian armed forces’ bravery and saluting the PM’s “unwavering resolve, visionary statesmanship, and resolute command.”
Speaking on Operation Sindoor, India’s retaliatory strike on terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, the PM reportedly said that the Opposition’s demand for a debate had backfired.
“The PM said the Opposition must be ruing its decision to force a discussion… he said he was standing there to defend the country and even the gods gave their support to him,” quoted a BJP leader who attended the meeting.
The Lok Sabha saw Modi deliver a detailed statement on July 29, while the Rajya Sabha witnessed a dramatic walkout by the Opposition over his absence, with Home Minister Amit Shah addressing the Upper House instead.
The Prime Minister, without naming Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, took pointed digs at his past remarks on the military, reportedly describing them as “childish.” He referenced the Supreme Court’s disapproval of Gandhi’s comments during the 2022 Bharat Jodo Yatra, calling attention to the gravity of such statements.
He further invoked a Hindi idiom when an MP described the Opposition’s move as “aa bail mujhe maar", a ”self-invited blow.
“The PM said he does not want to use such words but indicated his disapproval of the LoP,” said another source present at the meeting.

Reflecting on the NDA’s 25-year journey, Modi paid homage to stalwarts like Atal Bihari Vajpayee, L. K. Advani, George Fernandes, Bala Saheb Thackeray, and Nitish Kumar, underlining how their unity disrupted Congress’s “misrule.”
Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju confirmed that the PM urged alliance partners to preserve the organic spirit of the NDA and allow stronger regional allies to lead in their areas.
The PM also reiterated that no one would be allowed to make irresponsible remarks on India’s territorial integrity.
“He spoke about the statements made by Gandhi about the territorial issues and security of the country,” said Rijiju.
MPs stood in applause after the PM’s speech and greeted him with chants of “Har Har Mahadev.”

The resolution passed by the NDA saluted the “heroic valor” of the Indian armed forces during Operation Sindoor and Operation Mahadev, following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which killed 26 people.
It hailed the response to terror as a “new normal,” declaring:
“If there is a terrorist attack on India, a fitting reply will be given, on India’s terms.”
“India will not tolerate any nuclear blackmail.”
“No difference will be made between a government that sponsors terrorism and its masterminds.”
The resolution also highlighted the government’s push for defense indigenization and the international diplomatic offensive launched after the operations.
