Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Tokyo on August 29, 2025, for a two-day official visit at the invitation of Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba. This marks Modi’s first standalone visit to Japan in seven years. Upon arrival, he expressed on X, “I look forward to engaging with PM Ishiba and others during this visit, thus providing an opportunity to deepen existing partnerships and explore new avenues of collaboration.”

The Indian diaspora in Tokyo warmly welcomed him. PM Modi praised them for their “commitment to preserving cultural roots while contributing meaningfully to Japanese society.” Japanese artists also performed cultural shows to celebrate their visit.

Trade and Investments Take Center Stage

The summit between India and Japan aims to strengthen economic ties. India and Japan may announce a deal to manufacture next-generation E10 Shinkansen bullet trains in India. A source said, “The project is in line with the success of the Maruti Suzuki joint venture that happened about four decades ago, but its scale and strategic importance are immense.”

India-Japan Trade at a Glance

  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Organic chemicals
  • Textiles and garments
  • Iron and steel
  • Tea and coffee

India imports items from Japan, like:

  • Automobiles and auto parts
  • Machinery and industrial equipment
  • Electronics
  • Chemicals and plastics

This trade strengthens economic collaboration and creates opportunities for new industries in India.

Cultural Diplomacy: Connecting People Beyond Trade

This visit of PM Modi highlights the cultural diplomacy of India, and by engaging with the Indian community in Tokyo and attending cultural events, the PM emphasizes the soft power of India. This approach strengthens ties beyond trade, builds mutual respect, and reinforces Japan’s appreciation for Indian heritage and values.

Japan has made significant investments in India’s industrial, technological, and infrastructure initiatives, and the two countries have a long history of political and economic cooperation. It is anticipated that this gathering would foster regional and international peace initiatives while strengthening strategic and cultural ties.

Impact on US Tariff Tensions

This visit of PM Modi to Japan is strategically very important and significant. Something good and impactful can come after the meeting, amid escalating trade tensions with the United States, particularly the doubling of tariffs on Indian goods to 50%.

India is seeking to diversify its economic partnerships and reduce dependency on the US market.

The anticipated $68 billion investment from Japan over the next decade is a step toward this diversification, which also provides India with alternative avenues for trade and investment. This move aligns with India’s “Make in India” initiative and aims to bolster its manufacturing sector.

Next on PM Modi’s Schedule

After concluding the Japan visit, PM Modi will travel to China for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin. He is also scheduled to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping on August 31.
