Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the historic town of Gangaikonda Cholapuram in Tamil Nadu’s Ariyalur district on Saturday, where he paid homage to the great Chola emperor Rajendra Chola I by unveiling a commemorative coin in his honour. The ancient town, once the imperial capital of the Chola dynasty, wore a festive look as thousands gathered to witness the Prime Minister’s landmark visit.
The event took place near the iconic Brihadisvara Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, constructed over a thousand years ago by Rajendra Chola I following his triumphant military campaign to the Gangetic plains. In commemoration of that victory, the emperor established Gangaikonda Cholapuram as the new capital and constructed the Brihadisvara Temple and the Chola Gangam (also called Ponneri), a massive artificial lake that demonstrated the dynasty’s architectural and engineering prowess.
The commemorative coin, released by PM Modi, was issued at the request of R. Komagan, Chairman of the Gangaikondacholapuram Development Council Trust. The Prime Minister praised the Chola kings for their lasting legacy and their unmatched contributions to India's cultural, administrative, and maritime history.
“The Chola dynasty stands tall among the greatest empires in Indian history. Their vision shaped not only Tamil Nadu but left a lasting influence across Southeast Asia. The world must recognise the wisdom and excellence of rulers like Rajaraja Chola and Rajendra Chola,” Modi said in his address.
Highlighting the need to preserve and honour India’s ancient heritage, PM Modi announced the installation of grand statues of both Rajaraja Chola and Rajendra Chola in Tamil Nadu. He said these installations would serve as symbols of national pride and historical awareness.
“The legacy of these rulers belongs not just to Tamil Nadu but to all of India. Their contributions must be remembered and celebrated for generations to come,” the Prime Minister added.
The visit is seen as a major boost to cultural tourism in Tamil Nadu and a renewed focus on India's rich and diverse dynastic heritage.
