The Indian delegation announced with regret that Vinesh Phogat has been disqualified from the women’s 50 kg wrestling division at the Paris Olympics 2024. Despite the team’s best efforts, Phogat weighed slightly over 50 kg during the weigh-in this morning, leading to her disqualification. The Indian team has decided not to make further statements at this time and requests privacy for Vinesh Phogat.

Phogat had been a strong contender, having wrestled her way to the final match. Earlier in the tournament, she achieved a notable victory over Yui Susaki in the pre-quarterfinals, a remarkable feat given Susaki’s undefeated international record and gold medal from the Tokyo Olympics.

The disqualification marks a poignant moment in Phogat’s career. After the final whistle, both Phogat and Susaki appeared stunned. Vinesh Phogat, visibly emotional, reflected on her journey, including a career-threatening injury from the Rio 2016 Olympics. As she lay on the mat, tears in her eyes, the weight of her unexpected turn of events was evident.
