Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the importance of investing in resilient infrastructure, stating that the focus should shift towards resilience once relief and rehabilitation efforts are completed following a disaster. Speaking at the 6th International Conference on Disaster Resilient Infrastructure via video message, PM Modi praised the growth of the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) since its establishment in 2019, noting that it now comprises 39 countries and 7 organizations.

“We must invest in resilient infrastructure today for a better tomorrow,” PM Modi stated. He highlighted the need to factor resilience into new infrastructure projects and post-disaster rebuilding efforts. He also underscored the human impact of natural disasters, mentioning the destruction of homes, disruption of water and sewage systems, and potential dangers to energy plants.

PM Modi emphasized the interconnected nature of disasters, stating that the world can only be resilient collectively when each country is resilient individually. He stressed the importance of supporting the most vulnerable, particularly Small Island Developing States at high risk of disasters. He mentioned CDRI’s program for funding projects in 13 such places, including initiatives for resilient housing, transport networks, and early warning systems.

The Prime Minister recalled the establishment of a new Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group during India’s G20 Presidency, focusing on financing discussions. He expressed confidence that these efforts, along with the growth of CDRI, will lead to a more resilient future.
