Piyush Goyal Pays Heartfelt Tribute to Ratan Tata, Recalls Idli-Sambhar Breakfast and His Thoughtful Gestures

On Thursday, Union Minister Piyush Goyal paid an emotional tribute to Ratan Tata, recalling him as a compassionate and generous leader who elevated the Tata Group to international prominence and enhanced India’s global reputation.

“Thoughtful Gestures Made Him The Ratan Tata”

Goyal emphasized how Ratan Tata’s small, thoughtful actions endeared him to millions of people across India and the world. “His small thoughtful gestures make him the man ‘The Ratan Tata’—whom 140 crores Indians love and the world loves,” Goyal said.

Reflecting on a personal memory, Goyal recounted an emotional moment when Tata visited his home in Mumbai for breakfast. “We had only served a simple Idli, Sambhar, Dosa, but he was so appreciative. He must have had access to the world’s best cooks, but he was so kind to all of us,” Goyal recalled tearfully.

Tata’s kindness extended to everyone, including the servers at the breakfast. Goyal shared how, before leaving, Tata sweetly asked Goyal’s wife if she wanted a photo with him. “We wanted to, but were shy to ask. He offered it. It is these small gestures that made him so beloved.”

Piyush Goyal also highlighted Ratan Tata’s charitable character, recalling a time when young doctors wanted to establish a hospital in Sambhajinagar to serve the public. Tata, learning of their initiative, provided immediate assistance, which led to the establishment of the Dr. Hedgewar Hospital, now a major healthcare facility treating lakhs of people annually.

Goyal further mentioned Tata’s immense contribution during the COVID-19 pandemic. “When the country was facing the pandemic, Ratan Tata pledged ₹1,500 crore without any hesitation. This greatly helped in our battle against COVID.”

Ratan Tata’s mortal remains were brought to the NCPA lawns in Mumbai’s Nariman Point for the public to pay their final respects before the funeral ceremony. According to Tata Trust, the final journey to the Prayer Hall at Worli Crematorium was scheduled for 4 PM on Thursday.

The Maharashtra government declared one day of mourning in honor of the veteran industrialist. Many gathered at the NCPA lawns, and tributes poured in from across the country, including from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and chief ministers of various states.

A Life of Service

Ratan Tata, born on December 28, 1937, in Mumbai, was the Chairman Emeritus of Tata Sons and led the Tata Group from 1991 to 2012. He was also the Chairman of Ratan Tata Trust and Dorabji Tata Trust, two of India’s largest philanthropic organizations.

Tata was a recipient of numerous honors, including the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian award, in 2008. His legacy of service, compassion, and thoughtful gestures will continue to inspire generations
