Piyush Goyal Meets India’s Ambassador to Georgia Abhay Kumar

Union Minister Piyush Goyal and India’s Ambassador-designate to Georgia Abhay Kumar met to discuss ways to improve bilateral commercial relations.

Piyush Goyal Meets India’s Ambassador to Georgia Abhay Kumar

Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal met with India’s Ambassador-designate to Georgia, Abhay Kumar, on Thursday. The meeting focused on ways to improve and strengthen the commercial relations between India and Georgia.

Minister Piyush Goyal’s office shared the meeting details via a post on X, stating, “Minister @PiyushGoyal held a meeting with Mr. Abhay Kumar, India’s Ambassador Designate to Georgia.”

Abhay Kumar Seeks Guidance

During the meeting, Abhay Kumar, who is set to take up his new post shortly, expressed his intentions to seek guidance from Minister Goyal on enhancing commercial ties between the two countries. He posted on X: “As Ambassador-Designate to Georgia, I called on Shri @PiyushGoyal, Hon’ble Union Minister of Commerce and Industry of India, to seek his guidance on improving commercial relations between India and Georgia.”

Ambassador-Designate Abhay Kumar

Abhay Kumar, an Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer from the 2003 batch, was appointed as India’s Ambassador to Georgia on December 9. He is currently the Deputy Director General of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR). The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced that Kumar would soon assume his new role in Georgia.

Diplomatic Relations Between India and Georgia

India officially recognized Georgia’s independence on December 26, 1991, and established formal diplomatic relations on September 28, 1992. The Indian Embassy in Tbilisi began operations on July 29, 2024, while the Indian Ambassador to Armenia also holds accreditation to Georgia.

Georgia established its Honorary Consulate in Delhi in 2005, which was later upgraded to a full-fledged embassy in 2009.
