Pune (Maharashtra) [India], July 12 (ANI): Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Commissioner Vijay Suryavanshi on Sunday directed officials to complete the preliminary inquiry into the Moshi garbage dumpyard building accident at the earliest and register a police case against the contractor company concerned.
The directions were issued during a review meeting chaired by the Commissioner with senior civic officials to assess the incident and the ongoing response. Additional Commissioners Kuldeep Jangam, Tripti Sandbhor and Vikrant Bagade, Joint Commissioner Manoj Lonkar, and officials from various departments were present at the meeting.
Earlier, Vijay Suryawanshi had directed officials to issue notices to the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) Environment Department and contractor Antony Lara Renewable.
The accident occurred at around 1:30 pm on July 8 when a heap of garbage collapsed onto a building at the Moshi garbage depot, claiming nine lives as several people were trapped beneath the debris.
Following the incident, rescue operations were launched by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the Indian Army, the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, the PMRDA Fire Department, the police, and other agencies.
Five people managed to come out of the building immediately after the collapse, while rescue teams later evacuated nine of the remaining 18 people trapped inside the building and under the garbage heap.
Suryavanshi also instructed officials to expedite the preliminary inquiry and initiate legal action against the contractor company in connection with the incident.
Union Minister of State Ramdas Athawale described the incident as tragic and distressing, calling for the demolition of substandard and unsound buildings as a preventive measure.
“Several people have lost their lives, and many are injured. The government has already provided Rs 25 lakhs in compensation to the affected families. This is a deeply tragic and distressing incident; such events must not happen, and concerted efforts are needed to prevent them. Buildings that are structurally unsound or substandard need to be demolished to avert such tragedies. The government will certainly pay attention to this matter,” the Union MoS told reporters. (ANI)
