The Mahakumbh Mela 2025 has led to an unprecedented influx of devotees, causing severe disruptions at Varanasi’s railway stations. In an attempt to secure a seat amidst the overwhelming demand, some passengers have resorted to extreme actions, including occupying the locomotive cabins of trains due to the lack of available space.
A recent video captured at Varanasi Cantt railway station showed passengers entering the train engine and locking themselves inside, unaware of the potential hazards. Railway personnel swiftly intervened, removing approximately 20 individuals from the cabin and cautioning them about the dangers of occupying crucial operational areas. This incident has rapidly spread across social media, shedding light on the immense strain faced by Varanasi’s transportation infrastructure during the Mela. As one of the largest Hindu pilgrimages in the world, the Mahakumbh Mela has attracted millions to Varanasi, significantly boosting the demand for train travel. The result has been overcrowding on trains, making it extremely difficult for passengers to secure seats, with safety concerns mounting as the chaos continues.
