Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi announced on Friday that a court-appointed committee has decided to deseal more than 300 shops that were sealed in 2018 due to alleged violations of norms. She termed this move as a “Diwali gift” to the impacted traders.
In 2018, a total of 392 garment shops situated in the Lajpat Nagar-IV area were sealed on the direction of a Supreme Court-appointed monitoring committee. These shops were accused of running commercial activities within a residential zone, Oberoi elaborated.
Highlighting the traders’ years-long struggle, Mayor Oberoi praised the committee’s recent decision as “praiseworthy”. A senior official from the MCD confirmed that the resolution to deseal the shops originated from the monitoring committee.
For the desealing process to commence, Oberoi explained that the traders would need to provide an undertaking along with several other documents. “They will have to present a supplementary lease deed issued by the L&DO, settle any due penalties and misuse charges to L&DO, and clear conversion and parking fees if outstanding,” Oberoi mentioned.
Additionally, the Mayor pointed out the necessity of submitting a certificate verifying structural stability to the MCD. “Only after these stipulated procedures are met will the shops be desealed,” she affirmed to the media.
