India as a Growing Market for AI

India stands out as a critical market for ChatGPT. Weekly active users in the country have grown more than four times in the past year. India now ranks among the top five developer markets globally on the OpenAI platform and has the largest population of students using ChatGPT worldwide. To strengthen adoption, OpenAI recently introduced its most affordable monthly plan at $4.60, targeting nearly one billion internet users.

Support for IndiaAI Mission

The Delhi office will support the government’s IndiaAI Mission and enhance services for millions of users. Union Minister for Electronics and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw welcomed the development, saying OpenAI’s decision reflects India’s growing leadership in digital innovation and AI adoption while he emphasized India’s strength in digital public infrastructure, AI talent, and enterprise-scale solutions.

New Products and Initiatives in India

The announcement follows several India-specific launches and OpenAI recently rolled out ChatGPT Go at Rs 399 per month with UPI payments, OpenAI Academy with MeitY to promote AI literacy, enhanced Indic language support in GPT-5, and Study Mode, a feature gaining popularity among Indian students. The company also plans to host its first Education Summit this month and a Developer Day later this year, but local businesses are already deploying OpenAI tools in agriculture, recruitment, and governance.

Challenges and Competition

OpenAI faces legal challenges in India, with book publishers and news outlets accusing it of using content without permission to train ChatGPT and the company has denied any wrongdoing. At the same time, competition is intensifying, Google’s Gemini and start-up Perplexity have launched aggressive offerings, making advanced AI tools freely available for many Indian users.

What Lies Ahead

The new entity in India has already been registered, and hiring has begun. OpenAI said more details about the Delhi office and roles will follow in the coming months. Altman underlined that India’s technology talent, developer ecosystem, and strong government backing make it one of the best-positioned countries to lead the AI revolution.
