Odisha: Two-Year-Old Elephant Calf Rescued After Lengthy 18-Hour Operation In Mayurbhanj

A two-year-old elephant calf was rescued from a 20-foot-deep irrigation pit in the Pokamunda jungle of Mayurbhanj district’s Karanjia forest division after an 18-hour operation led by forest officials and the local fire brigade on Sunday.

The calf had accidentally fallen into the recently dug pit, intended for irrigation. A dedicated team of forest officials, along with the fire brigade, worked tirelessly to execute the delicate rescue mission, ensuring minimal stress for both the calf and its mother.

To prevent interference during the operation, the team strategically guided the mother elephant away from the site, safeguarding both animals. Veterinarians from Baripada and Kendujhar were on-site to provide immediate medical attention, treating the calf’s injuries, including wounds to its legs and trunk, and administering necessary injections.

Following the rescue, the calf was transferred to the Chandaka Sanctuary for further recovery and rehabilitation, where it will receive specialized care in a secure environment.

The rescue showcased the coordinated efforts of the forest department, fire brigade, and local communities. Crowds gathered at the site, watching eagerly as the calf was safely brought to safety, highlighting the shared compassion for wildlife.
