Three railway employees were detained by the CBI in connection with the Balasore train catastrophe on June 2, marking the agency’s first arrests in the probe, according to officials.
CBI arrested Senior Section Engineer (signal) Arun Kumar Mahanta, Section Engineer Mohammed Amir Khan and Technician Pappu Kumar, all were posted in Balasore district, as per report.
The trio was also charged with hiding evidence following the incident. According to the officials, the three have been detained under IPC sections 201 (evidence destruction) and 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder). Later, under heavy security, the defendants were brought before the Special CBI Court in Bhubaneswar.
According to CBI officials, the agency requested a seven-day remand; however, the court granted a five-day remand for more investigation.
In the tragedy, which happened close to the Bahanaga Bazar station in the Balasore district of Odisha, 293 people lost their lives around 287 of them immediately or after being taken to a hospital, while the remaining six died of their injuries there.
The Shalimar-Chennai Coromandel Express, the Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express, and a stopped freight train were all involved in the rail accident.
