Valmiki Jayanti, celebrated every year on the full moon day (Purnima) in the month of Ashwin, marks the birth anniversary of Maharishi Valmiki. He is widely regarded as the first poet of Sanskrit literature and the author of the great Indian epic, the Ramayana.
Known as Adi Kavi (the first poet), Maharishi Valmiki’s contributions to Indian culture, philosophy, and literature are considered timeless. His teachings focus on righteousness (dharma), truth, and compassion, which continue to inspire millions across the world.
School Holiday Declared in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Other States
On the occasion of Valmiki Jayanti 2025, several states, including Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, have declared a public holiday on October 7 (Tuesday). Schools, government offices, and several private institutions will remain closed today.
The Delhi government announced that all government and aided schools would observe a full-day holiday to mark the birth anniversary of the sage. Similarly, the Uttar Pradesh government has also declared a state holiday, allowing students and staff to participate in cultural and religious events.
How States Are Celebrating Valmiki Jayanti
Across India, processions, devotional songs, and prayers are being organized to honour Maharishi Valmiki. Temples dedicated to him have been decorated with lights and flowers. In Delhi and Lucknow, community gatherings and cultural programs are planned to highlight his teachings and life story.
Social organizations and local committees are also conducting awareness drives, poetry readings, and bhajan sandhyas (devotional evenings) dedicated to Valmiki’s message of moral living and equality.
Significance of Valmiki’s Teachings
Maharishi Valmiki’s life is a symbol of transformation and self-realization. Born as a highway robber named Ratnakar, he later turned towards spirituality and became a revered sage after meditating for years. His journey from sin to sainthood teaches that change and enlightenment are possible for everyone.
The Ramayana, authored by Valmiki, remains one of the most important texts in Indian tradition, promoting values of truth, duty, and devotion.
Public Holiday Reminder
Residents of Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, and a few other states are advised to check their local government notifications for the official list of holidays. Essential services such as hospitals, police, and public transport will continue to operate as usual.
