Today’s reports confirm that during the encounter, Vipin was wounded in the leg.
In a dramatic development in the Noida dowry murder case, police reportedly shot accused Vipin Bhati in the leg on Sunday. This occurred while he tried to flee from custody during a recovery operation. The case has shocked the nation and intensified calls for justice.
Greater Noida Additional DCP Sudhir Kumar told Hindustan Times that the shooting happened as officers took Vipin for a recovery mission. During the process, he allegedly attempted to snatch a pistol from a police official. Police acted to prevent his escape.
Today’s reports confirm that during the encounter, Vipin was wounded in the leg. Police are now strengthening security and working to arrest other family members named in the case.
This case has already shaken the community. Four days earlier, Vipin was arrested for setting his wife, Nikki, ablaze — allegedly over a ₹35 lakh dowry demand. Nikki’s elder sister, Kanchan, witnessed the crime and reported years of torture against both sisters. A six-year-old boy also witnessed the event and gave a chilling statement:
“They poured something on my mother, slapped her, and set her ablaze with a lighter.”
Earlier, Vipin posted a misleading Instagram story suggesting his wife died by suicide. The post included, “Why did you leave me? The world is calling me a killer, Nikki.” Authorities viewed it as an attempt to confuse investigators.
A case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita has been filed for murder, criminal conspiracy, and voluntarily causing hurt. The police continue to search for his in-laws, who are still absconding.
Residents and Nikki’s family continue to protest fiercely. They demand swift and transparent justice in a case that signifies how deeply entrenched dowry-related violence remains in society.
