A second-year MBBS student of a private medical college in Durgapur, West Bengal, was allegedly raped inside hospital premises on Friday night. The shocking incident has triggered a massive political row in the state, drawing comparisons to the 2024 RG Kar case that shook the nation.

The Incident

The survivor, a 22-year-old student from Jaleswar in Odisha, had stepped out of her college campus around 8:30 pm with a male friend to have street food near the gate. According to sources, a man dragged her to a secluded area behind the hospital and raped her.

Police reached the spot soon after receiving the complaint and admitted the survivor to a hospital for medical examination. Investigators have started questioning the hospital staff and other individuals, including the friend who was with her.

‘No Security on Campus,’ Says Victim’s Father

The survivor’s father alleged gross negligence on the part of the hospital administration. "When I reached there, my daughter was in a serious condition, and there was no response from the hospital administration," he told reporters.

He said his daughter went out to eat phuchka (golgappas) after being called by her boyfriend, Wasif Ali. “When she reached the campus gate, around four to five people were there. One of them raped her, took her mobile phone, and demanded Rs 3,000 to return it. The boy abandoned her and fled. They raped her,” he said.

He added that the area lacked security and lighting. “Such a serious incident occurred, but no action has been taken. There is no system here, no response,” he alleged, demanding justice and better campus safety.

Investigation and Response

The police have not yet issued an official statement. Sources said multiple angles are being examined to establish the sequence of events. Underlining the need for better campus safety, senior police officials have reportedly asked for CCTV footage and campus security logs to aid the investigation.

Political Reactions: BJP vs TMC

The incident has sparked a fierce political battle. The West Bengal Doctors’ Front (WBDF) condemned the crime, calling it “another chilling reminder that women are not safe even on campuses.” The group urged the Chief Justice of India to take suo motu cognizance and order a judicial probe.

The BJP slammed the Mamata Banerjee government, accusing it of repeated law-and-order failures. “This repeated failure of law and order exposes a disturbing pattern under Mamata Banerjee’s administration,” said Amit Malviya, BJP IT cell chief. “The police must ensure a transparent and impartial investigation so that the guilty face the harshest punishment under the law.”

In response, Trinamool Congress (TMC) minister Shashi Panja accused the BJP of politicising a sensitive issue. “Is there any place for politics here? Tell the BJP to shut down its shop in Bengal. The police have started an investigation into the matter,” she said.

Rising Crimes Against Women in West Bengal

This case comes amid mounting criticism of the state government over rising crimes against women. In July, a law student was allegedly gangraped inside South Calcutta Law College. Last year, a junior doctor was raped and murdered inside Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College — a case that led to nationwide protests by doctors demanding safer workplaces.

The latest Durgapur case once again raises pressing questions about women’s safety, campus security, and the need for strict accountability in West Bengal’s institutions.
