A major contradiction has emerged in the investigation into the death of popular Assamese singer Zubeen Garg. Even though seven people have been arrested in Assam for murder, Singapore Police say their preliminary probe has found no signs of foul play. This conflicting information has heightened tensions and created confusion surrounding the case.

What Did the Singapore Police Conclude?

In an official statement aimed at addressing “speculation and false information circulating online,” the SPF delivered a clear preliminary finding. “Based on preliminary investigations, the SPF does not suspect foul play,” the agency declared. Their investigation is being conducted under the Coroners Act 2010 and could take up to three more months to complete. The final findings will then be submitted to the State Coroner, who will decide if a formal inquiry is necessary. The SPF also revealed that they had already shared their preliminary findings and an autopsy report with India’s high commission in Singapore on October 1.

Why is the Assam Police Pursuing a Murder Case?

The Assam Police are actively investigating a murder case, which is a sharp contrast to the Singaporean authorities. Seven people, including Garg's own brother, have been taken into custody by the state government's Special Investigation Team (SIT), which is housed within the Crime Investigation Department. Assam's Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, has stated that the SIT is expected to submit its report by late November or early December. To resolve the conflicting reports, a team from Assam Police is scheduled to arrive in Singapore on October 21 for direct discussions with the SPF.

How Has the Public in Assam Reacted?

Zubeen Garg was a cherished cultural symbol in Assam, and the case has sparked intense feelings there. Public outrage boiled over when a police convoy transporting five of the accused was attacked by about 150 protesters. The crowd pelted stones at the vehicles, injuring several police officers. Officers resorted to a lathi-charge and warning shots, injuring two people. The clash shows how emotional and intense the singer’s supporters have become in their call for justice.

What are the Next Steps in the Investigation?

The path forward involves multiple parallel investigations. The Singapore police have urged for patience as their coroner's inquiry continues. Meanwhile, in Assam, a one-man inquiry commission headed by Justice Soumitra Saikia of the Gauhati High Court has been established. This commission has been charged with investigating possible errors, carelessness, or the likelihood of conspiracy and foul play. It has also issued a public notice, calling for citizens to furnish their statements and evidence between November 3 and 23 to aid its investigation.
