No Decision Yet on PM Modi’s Attendance at UN General Assembly in September

India is yet to confirm PM Modi’s UNGA visit in September, despite his name on the provisional list and speculation over meetings with Zelensky and Trump, amid ongoing India-US trade tensions and Russia-related disagreements.

India is yet to decide if PM Modi will participate in the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York in September. The officials familiar with the matter confirmed that a final decision is expected closer tot he session dates. 

After the prime minister’s name popped up in the provisional list of speakers for high-level debate, the speculation around his participation grew stronger. However, President Zelensky gave a hint about a possible meeting with Modi on the sidelines of UNGA. 

According to the provisional UN schedule, the head of government of India is expected to speak on the morning of September 26. The debate will be held between September 23 to 29. President of the United States Donald Trump will speak on the opening day.

‘Very Unlikely at Present’ 

The Indian officials asserted that there is no decision has been made till now and at this point, it is very unlikely that PM Modi will go to the UN General Assembly. 

On the other hand, Zelensky posted on social media, hinting towards a planned meeting between the two leaders during the UNGA. This comment added to the speculation that PM Modi may also be meeting US President Donald Trump on an expected US visit.

Differences with US

After Trump imposed a 25% reciprocal tariff and then a 25% additional tariff on India for continued purchase of Russian oil, the relations between the United States and India have been strained.

recently, Trump has accused India of supporting Russia’s warfare by buying its crude oil. He also criticized India’s tarrif policies with repeated claims of brokering a ceasefire between India and Pakistan earlier this year.
