Bihar Chief Minister and Janata Dal-United (JDU) national president Nitish Kumar expressed confidence on Thursday that ongoing seat-sharing discussions within the INDIA alliance were progressing well. Assuring reporters, Kumar stated, “Everything will be done on time, don’t worry.” The remarks come amid reports of challenges in reaching a consensus on seat-sharing among INDIA alliance members for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, despite multiple rounds of talks in Delhi and other locations.
Kumar’s statement is perceived as a positive signal, indicating a potential resolution to the deadlock over seat-sharing in Bihar. Insider sources reveal that the alliance is engaged in intensive deliberations, with the JDU maintaining a firm stance on its seat-sharing expectations, presenting a challenge for the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and Congress. In the midst of these discussions, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has declared its intention to contest on three seats.
The JDU claims a prior understanding with the RJD, as all parties were previously allied. Specifically, the JDU seeks 16 seats, leaving the remaining 24 for other alliance partners.
Responding to questions about the ongoing seat-sharing talks for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections scheduled for April-May, Nitish Kumar assured that everything would be finalized on time. The statement comes as members of the INDIA bloc engage in daily discussions in Delhi to address seat-sharing concerns.
Recent meetings involving leaders from Shiv Sena (UBT), NCP (Sharad Pawar), and Congress have taken place in Delhi, with discussions extending to Maharashtra’s seat-sharing arrangements. Congress is conducting cluster-wise meetings to deliberate on candidates for the impending elections.
In a separate development, Nitish Kumar received an invitation to the consecration ceremony of Ram Mandir in Ayodhya scheduled for January 22. JD(U) leader KC Tyagi stated that Kumar, as the Chief Minister and party president, is yet to decide on attending the ceremony.
